BRF, one of the largest food companies in the world and owner of Sadia, Perdigão and Qualy brands, already has 90% of its energy matrix composed of renewable sources. Among them, biomass stands out as one of the main contributions, being obtained from Eucalyptusreforestation. It is mainly used for steam generation in production processes, which helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

BRF has about 27,000 hectares of forest assets destined towards biomass production, distributed across eight Brazilian states and more than 190 farms. 95% of these farms are owned or leased. Species of the genus Eucalyptus occupy 96% of these areas, with small plots destined forPinus (1.1%) and other species, such as araucaria, bamboo and mimosa (0.5%).

"We are committed to using renewable energy sources and reducing our environmental impact as much as possible, always seeking innovation and efficiency in food production," says Cicero Suzin, CIEX Engineering and Environment director at BRF. In 2023 alone, the company invested R$8.4 million in projects aimed at optimizing energy use in its operations.

Sustainability: The use of renewable energy is part of the climate change pillar of BRF's sustainability platform, which also includes low-carbon agribusiness, operational efficiency and the sustainable purchase of grains that are used in feed production.  BRF ended the 2023 cycle with a 21% reduction in total emissions linked to Scopes 1 and 2 when compared to the 2019 baseline, mainly motivated by the prioritization of renewable energy consumption. The company aims to have 50% of energy from clean sources by 2030.
