Marfrig and BRF, two of the largest food companies in the world, have once again achieved the Gold Seal of the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program, the highest level of certification granted to companies that meet transparency criteria in the publication of greenhouse gas emissions inventory. This distinction marks BRF’s 16th consecutive certification and Marfrig’s second consecutive certification.

Established in 2008 by FGVces and WRI, in partnership with the Ministry of the Environment, CEBDS, WBSCD, and founding companies — including BRF —, the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program adapts the international methodology for calculating and managing emissions to the national context and maintains the Public Emissions Registry, a benchmark in corporate transparency. Marfrig and BRF follow this methodology in preparing their greenhouse gas emissions inventories, which are submitted annually for independent verification by a third party.

According to Paulo Pianez, Global Sustainability Director at Marfrig and BRF, the Gold Seal recognizes the strength and reliability of the commitments made by both companies in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Climate goals

Marfrig was the first Brazilian animal protein company to commit to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), which promotes the establishment of science-based targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions to meet the targets of the Paris Agreement (to limit global warming to 1.5°C). Its approved targets foresee a 68% reduction in direct emissions (Scopes 1 and 2) and a 33% decrease in the intensity of indirect emissions (Scope 3), encompassing its operations and the entire value chain, by 2035. It has also committed to using 100% of electric power from renewable sources by 2030.

BRF had its climate targets validated by the SBTi in December 2024, becoming the first food sector company in Brazil with approved targets under the new FLAG methodology, which includes emissions from forests, agriculture, and land use. The company aims to reduce 51% of direct emissions (Scopes 1 and 2) and 35.7% of indirect emissions (Scope 3) by 2032.
